Clothes are an intrinsic part of our daily routine. However fashion aware we are they still play a key role in our moods and the way we feel about ourselves. But when we choose an outfit, what does it say to other people? Does a specific outfit present a certain personality trait? Everyone makes judgements about appearance, even if they don’t mean to. This is particularly important when you’re dating – you wouldn’t want to give the wrong impression, whether you meet through university or through an online dating site such as eHarmony. Leaving nothing to the imagination…
Wearing too little never gives a good impression, especially on a date. A simple rule to judge if you’re wearing enough is to always make sure either your chest and shoulders or your legs are covered. A skirt with a high-necked top, or skinny jeans and a low-cut top is the perfect combination. Or even better, wear a full length dress with long sleeves, but make sure it shows off your shoulders and back. This will say modest but seductive and let someone’s imagination run wild under the guise of sophistication.
Personalization…
Wearing things that are a little bit more whacky and less mainstream gives an impression of a strong, assertive character. This is great for a date as it gives you a lot to talk about, as well as ensuring that you stand out as an interesting figure. Don’t go too over the top though, or you could put someone off by looking like too much of a nut.
Layers of make-up… Wearing too much make-up mostly says that you’re insecure and a little artificial. Lose a few layers for a date if you don’t want to give this impression. Wearing a foundation that matches your skin colour, a touch of blusher and a dab of mascara is all you need to look both natural and fantastic. This will give an impression of modesty and nonchalance about your appearance.
Scruffy shoes…
When a guy wears scuffed-up shoes it immediately says ‘unhygienic’ and ‘messy’ – not the best first impression to give. A girl won’t ask for a personality profile on a guy with scruffy shoes, they’ll just walk away. On the other hand, squeaky clean and smart shoes make women think you’re organized and tidy in all areas of your life. Go for some polished brogues and leave the scatty, stained trainers back at home.
Don’t let an outfit choice ruin a date. Always get a second opinion so that you know what your outfit says to others – because it might be very different to what it says to you.
